10,000 Fans Rally Behind Cancelled Sequel 'Tron 3'

JamesArthurArmstrong JamesArthurArmstrong On Friday, Disney made it public that they had pulled the plug on Tron 3. The studio hadn't made an official announcement that a third movie was even in development, however, on Friday, they did acknowledge that they had been dragging their feet with development leading to the entire project being cancelled.

Reaction from fans was definitive. They weren't happy with Disney's decision and since the announcement, have made their voices heard. An online petition asking Disney to revive Tron 3 has been making the rounds, with 10,000 signatures so far.

Fan Lucas Lowman started the Tron 3 petition on Change.org and had this to say, "Tron: Legacy grossed over 400 million dollars and helped more fully realise the world created in the original Tron. It’s a shame that Disney has elected not to move forward with a third Tron film as the universe is ripe to be explored. Sign this petition so that we may show Disney that The Grid is too great to never be shown again and to prove that Flynn lives."

Lowman’s goal is approximately 15,000 signatures. Fans have also been voicing their support on Twitter under #FlynnLives.

Disney haven't given a full reason as to why they decided not to move forward with Tron 3. An anonymous executive hinted that Disney have a lot of projects in the pipeline and it may have come down to scheduling. "Things in the queue got ahead of it and we have such a big slate out in front of it, we started to think, ‘Where does it go?’ And it’s a pretty big investment to make if you are not even sure when you are going to release it."

Others have suggested that the recent box office failure of Disney's Tomorrowland may have played a part in the decision. But in the cold light of day, that would've been quite a knee jerk reaction. Tron: Legacy was a hit, grossing $400 million worldwide even though it did cost $170 million to make. But, what Tron has over Tomorrowland is it's a pre-existing fan base — a huge marketing tool in modern day Hollywood.

Whatever their reasons, it looks like we won't be seeing Tron 3 any time soon, even with the petition. But the petition is a great example to show Disney that there is an audience out there who'd appreciate such a movie.
