Amazon Lands Rights to a TV Adaptation of Oscar-Winning 'The Departed'

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell A TV series of Martin Scorsese's The Departed was reported to be in the works earlier this year, and now the series is headed to Amazon Studios, to be produced alongside Vertigo Entertainment, Initial Entertainment Group, and Plan B Entertainment.

The series will have no ties to the 2006 film. The film itself was a remake of the Hong Kong crime drama Infernal Affairs. The concept was a detective going undercover to incriminate a crime ring, while the police department was already being infiltrated by someone with ties to the criminals.

The show will use that same concept, but will be set outside of Boston, set in present-day Chicago, in the middle of the conflict of some ethnic drug gangs at war with one another. The police department sends in a young cop to go undercover in a ruthless Latino gang while the gang itself has a man placed in the police.

The series will be written by Jason Richman, though there is no director as yet at the helm for the pilot. It's likely that this will be a part of Amazon's next batch of pilots, so we'll keep an eye on developments as they happen.
