Austin Powers Writer to Pen the Script for 'Shrek 5'
The Shrek franchise fizzled out a little but rightfully remains a beloved anthology despite diminishing returns after the second film. While there's no need to continue the swamp dwellers' story, that's never stopped anybody in the movie-making business.
And so, Shrek 5 is headed to theaters for a 2019 release, which is sooner than you'd think, and it now has a writer on board with Michael McCullers penning the script. Franchise alumnus Mike Mitchell and Walt Dohrn revealed the news while promoting their new film Trolls.
"They’ve got a pretty good story. It’s being written by Michael McCullers who wrote all of the Austin Powers films. He came up with a really great idea that they’re exploring." Dohrn added that the duo are prepared to help tell the next story in the Shrek mythos.
Whether Shrek can become relevant again in an age where animated film has actually grown taller in the marketplace remains to be seen. There's a lot more competition now than there was, even if it was only six years ago that Shrek Forever After hit theaters.
