Ben Affleck - Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)

Affleck's announcement for the role of Batman was met with plenty of skepticism, with many considering him not intimidating enough for the role. Affleck himself expressed concern, believing himself not befitting of it until director Zack Snyder calmed him with his vision for the caped crusader, explaining how it would differ from Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale's iteration.

This is Affleck's second superhero role, having played Daredevil in the 2003 film of the same name. That particular failure led him to denounce any other superhero roles back in 2006, though obviously Snyder's vision was too great a draw for the 43 year old actor.

Early praise has been attributed to Affleck's portrayal as a brutal, older version of Bruce Wayne. Snyder himself was fascinated by the idea of pitting a wearier Batman against a younger Superman, leveling the field in certain aspects. The violent nature of this universe's Batman is very much in line with the character as he appears in stories such as The Dark Knight Returns, which Batman v Superman draws much of its inspiration from.
