Bidding War Begins for a Live-Action Pokémon Film

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell Pokémon has proven to be an enormous property over the years. You only have to look no further than the eruption and staying power of its console games to know that its a franchise that prints money. So a live-action Pokémon, while surely difficult, would be something truly special if pulled off.

Three studios are battling for the rights to the live-action possibilities. NIntendo is flashing their property, and Warner Bros. ,who distributed Pokemon: The First Movie in 1999, has emerged as an early favourite. Sony is also, according to THR, very interested in the project.

With a conclusion to the bidding war on the horizon, Legendary Pictures has thrown its name in the hat. While Legendary has worked with Warner Bros. and Universal in the past, it is now owned by China's Wanda Group, which might cause some friction of the beloved Japanese series trades hands, given the history between the nations.

A Pokemon film could offer plenty of fun, but it could also turn out like Dragonball: Evolution. Only time will tell, really.
