Daniel Day-Lewis Announces Retirement From Acting

GregHarmon GregHarmon Managing Editor Three-time Oscar winner, Daniel Day-Lewis has announced his retirement from acting.

“Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor,” his publicist Leslee Dart said in a statement to Variety, who first reported the news. “He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.”

At 60 years old [young], Daniel Day-Lewis is set to release what will be his final film, Phantom Thread, a drama set in the world of high fashion where he’ll reunite with There Will Be Blood director Paul Thomas Anderson. Phantom is scheduled to hit theaters on December 25, 2017.

Lewis won the Best Actor Academy Award for Lincoln (2012), There Will Be Blood (2007) and My Left Foot (1990). He also was nominated for his role as "Bill 'The Butcher' Cutting" in Gangs Of New York (2002) and "Gerry Conlon" in, In the Name Of The Father (1993); two roles equally deserving of awards accolades. His career spans nearly three decades including early lead roles in James Ivory's A Room With A View (1985), Jim Sheridan's The Boxer, and Michael Mann's adaptation of The Last Of The Mohicans (1992). Pick your film or perhaps your favorite role. There are no wrong answers. We can only hope Daniel has a change of heart (See – Steven Soderbergh) and decides to return to film someday.

Day-Lewis has three children and is married to writer and director Rebecca Miller.
