'Die Hard: Year One' taps 'The Conjuring' screenwriting duo

GregHarmon GregHarmon Managing Editor Brace yourselves Die Hard faithful. Die Hard: Year One appears closer to becoming a reality.

The Tracking Board reports 20th Century Fox has tapped The Conjuring screenwriting duo, Chad and Carey Hayes to rewrite the script for Len Wiseman's sixth Die Hard installment. You may recognize the work of the Brother's Hayes having written a few studio genres such as Jaume Collet-Serra's House of Wax remake, The Reaping, and Kate Beckinsale's 2009 thriller Whiteout.

While news of a "Die Hard" prequel will come with a hefty dose of skepticism, it should not come as a total shocker since the origins can be traced back to 2009's limited eight-issue comic series Die Hard: Year One . Howard Chaykin wrote the series as a prequel nod to John McTiernen's Christmas classic Die Hard, following John McClane in his twenties as an NYPD rookie beat cop.

Of course with source material and a franchise on life support, rumors swirled in 2015 when Live Free or Die Hard’s Len Wiseman unveiled plans for a prequel adaptation tweeting Die Hard: Year One. Fast forward to September 2017 when Deadline confirmed Wiseman would indeed return to direct the next installment that’s described as a prequel/sequel that will involve John McClane in both present day and 1970’s New York when McClane was a beat cop. Flashbacks? Really?

Bruce Willis confirmed his involvement while promoting Death Wish on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. When was asked about the status of Die Hard 6, Willis confirmed it's happening and he’ll be meeting with Wiseman and co in L.A. to review the script. It's not been confirmed who wrote the first draft.

Regardless, sounds like there's still a bit of work to be done before we start tilting over Die Hard: Year One. Stay calm and stay tuned for more news.
