Director Robert Schwentke Drops Out of Divergent Series Finale

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell Having signed on for the final three films of the franchise (each coming one year after the other), director Robert Schwentke has dropped out of the finale to the Divergent series, the penultimate film of which comes out this year,

The falling out is not a hostile one, according to Deadline (who broke the story). Instead, Schwentke just need a break from the franchise, having shot Insurgent and Allegiant in such short time. While the director reportedly remains on good terms with Lionsgate, it must raise the question that surely Schwentke knew the pace at which these films were intended to release.

Now, Lionsgate are left to pick through the debris and find a suitable candidate that can take the helm for the final installment of the franchise, which is set for a June 9, 2017 release date.

Schwentke took over the franchise from Neil Burger, who directed the first film. The urgency that Lionsgate intended for the franchise meant that post-production on each film would overlap pre-production on the next. Insurgent and Allegiant were then shot back-to-back with the new director.

Allegiant hits theatres March 18.
