Disney Will Make Live-Action Remake of 'Mulan'

The trend continues as Disney have announced they are indeed working on a live-action remake of another of their classic movies, Mulan.

The Hollywood Reporter writes that Disney has just picked up a Mulan script from Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek “that centers on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, the female warrior who was the main character in Disney’s 1998 animated film.” Chris Bender and J.C. Spink (We’re the Millers) will produce.

Mulan was success critically commercially when it was released, but didn't quite reach the heights Beauty and the Beast or The Lion King did in terms of audience love. It managed to bring in $304 million globally and spawned a direct-to-video sequel, Mulan II, in 2005.

So far, remaking their classic movies has been a successful endeavour for Disney. Cinderella has currently taken $335 million at the box office, with last year's Maleficent being one of 2014's most successful releases. The studio has several more such projects in the works, including The Jungle Book set for release in 2016, Beauty and the Beast which is scheduled for 2017, and Dumbo which will be directed by Tim Burton but has yet to be given a release date.
