Early Oscar Predictions for Best Director Category

JamesArthurArmstrong JamesArthurArmstrong We're approaching the end of October which means award season is on the horizon. It's about time we all began thinking about who could be contenders at the upcoming Academy Awards in February.

the early frontrunner

There can only be one director who can lay claim to being the early frontrunner. Richard Linklater is about the only director who is guaranteed a nomination in the Best Director category. His movie Boyhood will likely follow suit and be awarded a Best Picture nomination, too. Linklater created a movie unlike any that will be in serious contention at this years Oscars. It may well be a fairytale only a Hollywood screenwriter could write if Linklater and Boyhood walked away with two of the biggest honours come February? Linklater is one of the most imaginative directors working today. He has made movies for pennies over his career, whilst managing to always capture the independent spirit.

the other contenders

Other contenders for the Best Director category range from previous nominees David Fincher (Gone Girl), Mike Leigh (Mr. Turner), Bennett Miller (Foxcatcher), Alejandro González Iñárritu (Birdman) and Christopher Nolan (Interstellar). Unlike the Best Picture category, only five can be lucky enough to land a nomination. All the above are worthy contenders, with all their movies being vastly different from one another.

Possible Best Director nominee virgins could be JC Chandor (A Most Violent Year), Tim Burton (Big Eyes), James Marsh (The Theory of Everything), Angelina Jolie (Unbroken) and Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest). If we had to name one from this group that could land their first Best Director nomination Angelina Jolie would likely be the prime candidate. Why? Jolie knows a lot of people in high places in Hollywood. Remember, theres a ton of pitching for a nomination that goes on before nominations are announced. Either way, it shouldn't matter— this is Linklater's award all day long.

• Angelina Jolie (Unbroken)
