First Trailer ‘True Detective’ Season 3

GregHarmon GregHarmon Managing Editor After three long years, Nic Pizzolatto’s crime anthology series returns with an all new installment starring Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo, and Stephen Dorff.

HBO’s first teaser packs a palpable punch, featuring ambitious lawmen, a macabre crime, and a landscape that’s an extension of the character. If this sounds like Season one (which it does on paper), then it’s possible we’re in for something special.

True Detective season three will take viewers thru a journey spanning multiple decades and will play out in not two, but three separate time periods following Arkansas police detectives Wayne Hays (Mahershala Ali) and Roland West (Stephen Dorff) as they investigate a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks.

Much like the backwoods of Louisiana was an extension of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson’s characters in season one, the Ozarks offer a foreboding mystery that has Mahershala Ali’s “Wayne Hayes” undergoing a similar transformation in mind, body, and spirit as narrated in HBO’s first trailer:

Before you ever knew me, I wasn't scared much. There wasn't fear for me. Things I've seen. Things I know. My whole brain is a bunch of missing pieces.”

True Detective Season 3 Teaser Trailer

Actress Carmen Ejogo (The Girlfriend Experience) stars alongside Ali and Dorff as Amelia Reardon, an Arkansas school teacher with a connection to two missing children. Justice League’s Ray Fisher will play Freddy Burns, Wayne’s son. Batman vs. Supes alum, Scoot McNairy has been cast as a father who suffers a terrible loss whose fate is tied to both Hays (Ali) and West (Dorff) over the 10 year period. Additionally, Rhys Wakefield (The Purge), Michael Greyeyes (Fear the Walking Dead) and Jon Tenney (That's 'Sheriff Behan’ in Tombstone) have been cast in recurring but undisclosed roles.

Nic Pizzolatto returns as the series’ sole scribe along with Deadwood’s David Milch, who co-wrote episode 4. HBO has yet to announce an exact release date but the third installment is confirmed to arrive in January 2019.
