JamesArthurArmstrong JamesArthurArmstrong Last night the 68th Cannes Film Festival came to a close with the prestigious Palme d'Or handed out to a surprising victore.

French auteur Jacques Audiard's 'Dheepan' took home the prize which was greeted by a mixture of cheers, boos, shrugs and puzzled faces. Upon its premiere, 'Dheepan' received mixed reviews from the press, but the jury of this years festival found it to be the stand out of the festival.

During a press conference after the award show, head jurors Joel and Ethan Coen both explained why 'Dheepan' was given the honour, “We all thought it was a beautiful movie,” Ethan said. To which Joel added, “This isn’t a jury of film critics. This is a jury of artists looking at the work.”

“Thank you, Michael Haneke, for not making a film this year,” Audiard said as he accepted his Palme — a reference to the fact that the Austrian helmer of 'The White Ribbon' and 'Amour' had beaten him for the Palme his last two times in competition.

The big winners on the night where the French. In total the jury handed out three awards to French films. Along with Audiard, Vincent Lindon for best actor and Emmanuelle Bercot for best actress, a prize she shared with Rooney Mara in 'Carol.'

Best Actress: Shared between Emmanuelle Bercot (Mon Roi), and Rooney Mara (Carol)

Jury Prize: Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster)

Best Screenplay: Michel Franco (Chronic)
