'Game of Thrones' Actor Addresses the Longer Wait for Fewer Episodes

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell Season seven of Game of Thrones is well underway with filming, but it's not secret that the series has pushed its upcoming season back to summer of this year, and with fewer episodes on order, there might be a few grumbling fans about.

But actor Iain Glen, who plays series mainstay Sir Jorah Mormont, has spoken to RadioTimes that the show is maintaining the same five months filming schedule for its seven episode season as it would a full-length ten episode one.

They are taking the length of time it takes to shoot 10 episodes to shoot just seven this year, and six next year," Glen said. "There are 15 more hours left in Thrones as we understand it, but that may change, but that's as far as we know. I think the scale and size of the set pieces, the world that is being created it's just getting more and more extraordinary and they feel they need that time to shoot seven hours as opposed to 10."

It looks like quality over quantity is a phrase that can come into play here, though Game of Thrones has never truly made any effort to prioritise quantity (looking at you, Walking Dead). With the show winding down, we can look to bigger set pieces with higher stakes, something that would make the showrunners and all involved as nervous as they would be excited, and eager to get this thing just right.

So too, do we have to consider that with the same filming length, it makes sense it was pushed back. Filming was delayed late last year in order to get the weather required, now that winter has arrived in Westeros.
