'Game of Thrones' could see shorter concluding seasons

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell If each new season's wait feels longer each year, it may just get unbearable. We may be looking at longer waits for fewer episodes as the show heads toward its home stretch.

Variety reports that showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff are considering cutting the final stretch of episodes for Game of Thrones to 13, with seven episodes in season 7 and six for an eighth and possibly final season.

"I think we're down to our final 13 episodes after this season. We're heading into the final lap," Benioff said. "That's the guess, though nothing is yet set in stone, but that's what we're looking at."

Variety does reiterate that nothing is finalised yet, but it wouldn't come as a surprise. With the enormous production schedule, it never really gets an off-season break. Not to mention, the showrunners have in the passed looked at a season 6 end-date, so in comparison to another reality we're still getting more Thrones.

HBO will make an official statement at some point in the future, probably at the pointy end of this upcoming season. I'd expect them to respect the vision of their showrunners, but we can't know for sure at this stage.
