Game of Thrones Prequel Series Begins Production

GregHarmon GregHarmon Managing Editor We know how the story ends but how does it all begin?

That is the very question showrunner Jane Goldman and series author George R.R. Martin will attempt to answer in HBO’s untitled “Game of Thrones” prequel series.

Production on the pilot episode is officially underway at The Paint Hall in Belfast’s Titanic Quarters. Incidentally that is the same location for Game of Thrones’ entire production run along with the location for David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ upcoming Star Wars spin-off.

Director SJ Clarkson is filming the pilot episode with two-time Oscar nominee Naomi Watts headlining as a character described as a “charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret.”

Joining Watts are Naomi Ackie (Lady Macbeth), Miranda Richardson, Denise Gough (Monday), Jamie Campbell Bower (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald), Sheila Atim (Harlots), Ivanno Jeremiah (Humans), Georgie Henley (The Chronicles of Narnia films), Alex Sharp (How to Talk to Girls at Parties) and Toby Regbo (The Last Kingdom, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald).

HBO’s prequel series will chronicle Westeros’ descent from the ‘golden Age of Heroes’ five thousand years before the Seven Kingdoms even existed. Before we get too excited, HBO execs will need to give the pilot episode two thumbs up before it’s given a full season run.

Baby steps.
