'Game of Thrones' Season Six Director Hints Writers Working Closely With George R.R. Martin

JamesArthurArmstrong JamesArthurArmstrong Director Jack Bender (The Sopranos, Lost), one of the recently announced five directors who'll helm episodes of the sixth season of the HBO hit series Game of Thrones, has described the new episodes as "mind-boggling."

Bender will direct episodes 5 and 6 of the new season, recently spoke with BGR before leaving for Belfast in a few weeks to start shooting, he gave a small taste of what fans can expect from the highly anticipated series.

As expected, the director doesn't reveal any plot lines or any secret regarding the upcoming episodes, but does reveal the sixth season extends beyond the storyline in George R.R. Martin’s published novels.

"Game of Thrones showrunners, Dan Weiss and David Benioff, are enormously brilliant and unpretentious guys, and I know they communicate closely with author Martin," Bender said. "This is how I look at it. As a director on ‘Lost,’ for example, I liked to say we get recipes from (‘Lost’ showrunners) Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse. Then, me and the writers and the rest of the team, we’d cook the meal. That’s always how I saw the metaphor."

Later in the interview, Bender mentions that his approach and attitude to directing shows is the same as an artist. "When I’m really old, maybe one day I’ll sit there and start going through the scrapbook and think about how this or that show got put together," he says. "I really fluctuate as an artist between audacity and insecurity. The audacity is about you having the balls to put your vision out there. But then in certain moments you go … well, what the eff do I know? All you can do is trust your instinct. All you can do is put your tracks in the snow."
