George R.R. Martin Pitches a 'Game of Thrones' Spin-Off

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell George R.R. Martin is notoriously patient when it comes to getting his work through the printing press, but his fans aren't quite so. With Season 6 set to break the direct link between book and TV, paving its way ahead of the source material, Martin has come out with a pitch for another of his books to get the screen treatment.

Two years ago Martin commented on a potential Game of Thrones movie doing the rounds at HBO, and he believed that the trilogy of novellas known as the Tales of Dunk and Egg were the source material. "They could be the basis for (a film)," he said back in 2014.

This time around, Martin has joined the spin-off talk that cropped up in the past week. “There is certainly no lack of material. Every episode of 'The Naked City' – one of the television shows I watched as a kid – ended with a voice-over: ‘There are eight million stories in the naked city. This has been one of them.’ There are eight million stories in Westeros as well … and even more in Essos and the lands beyond. A whole world full of stories, waiting to be told… if indeed HBO is interested,” he told EW.

“Each of the novellas could easily be done as a two-hour stand-alone movie for television; that would probably be the ideal way to do them, rather than as an ongoing weekly series. 'The Hedge Knight 'and and its sequels are lighter [in tone] than 'A Song of Ice and Fire,' more in the realm of action/adventure,” he added.

There is little doubt HBO would love to pencil in a new direction for the franchise now that an endgame is being set up, but time will tell whether Game of Thrones will live on following its series' end.
