'Gotham' Showrunner Unimpressed with Superheroes on Television

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell Fox's Gotham is just different enough from a straight-edged crime show and not quite a superhero drama, giving it something to keep it unique enough for fans to continue coming back for.

Showrunner Bruno Heller believes very much in the formula that's been designed for the show, which revolves around Jim Gordon and the GCPD fighting against a corrupted city. "I don't think superheroes work very well on TV. Probably because of the costume thing," Heller said at the Edinburgh Television Festival.

"TV is about real people and faces, and not so much about magic and the supernatural things," he said, explaining why Gordon is the center of Gotham, and not some superhero or vigilante.

He addresses the inclusion of some of the more fantastical elements of Batman lore throughout the series. "It’s a tricky combination, because you have to keep it real and unreal at the same time.

"Every season is moving towards the world, in which Batman has to emerge to save the day. So every season is doubling down on the chaos and anarchy that is overtaking Gotham. So, things keep getting worse.”

The series returns September 19.
