Star Wars: The Force Awakens Poster

J.J. Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy talk secrecy surrounding The Force Awakens.

constablejake constablejake Since the first trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens debuted last year, fans have been left salivating at the quality and excitement that the subsequent trailers have yielded to them.

However, the most important thing that the trailers have done is keep the story and spoilers under wraps. Too many trailers give too much away (I'm talking about you, Batman v Superman) and little intrigue is built up in anticipation, but where other films and their trailers have failed, Star Wars has triumphed.

During the Star Wars: The Force Awakens global press day, J.J. Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy spoke about the level of secrecy surrounding the production, and explained that the decision was made with fans in mind.

J.J. Abrams said, "While we were working on the movie, I realized how engaged with the fans and forthcoming Lucasfilm had always been. My nature, which is to keep things quiet, was something that I was certain we were going to have fights about. But Disney, to my shock, was arguing to not ruin, not reveal, not show every story beat.

"We've all seen trailers for films that literally show you the movie in Cliff's Notes form, and you go to see the film and go, 'yeah, that was literally the movie. I saw it in a 2 minute, 10 second piece.' So I was very grateful that Disney actually took the lead to keep things quieter."

Kathleen Kennedy concurred with, "I think right from the beginning, we've respected the fans. The fans have been the ones focused on everybody getting to be surprised. I've had people say to me that they don't want to read anything at all, so they can get to the theater and have it be a surprise. That's what's driving it, and we've tried to respect it."

Hopefully, we will see the start of a trend blossom due to the marketing campaign of the Force Awakens and films will no longer give everything away in the trailers before the film has been released. It appears that certain filmmakers are listening.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is to be released on the 17th of December in the UK before receiving a much wider release on the 18th.
