'Jurassic World' and 'Inside Out' Enjoy Huge Weekends at the Box Office

JamesArthurArmstrong JamesArthurArmstrong The past two weeks has seen moviegoers flooding into theatres around the world thanks to the releases of Jurassic World and Pixar's Inside Out. Both movies have helped box office revenue increase by 66 percent from last years Fathers Day weekend.

Heading into the weekend many experts predicted Jurassic World would have another stellar weekend and those calculations became a reality. Having said that, it was a much closer race than first thought. The dino flick roared to hold onto its number one spot with a mighty $102 million. It declined 51 percent from its opening weekend, and almost eclipsed Marvel's The Avengers second weekend haul of $103 million back in 2012. However, in just ten days, Jurassic World has managed to earn a massive $398 million domestically and nearly $1 billion worldwide.

Inside Out is the first Poxar movie not to debut at number one at the domestic box office — a winning streak Pixar were very proud of. But, Inside Out fared much stronger than experts first thought, giving Jurassic World a run for its money. It was always going to be a tough battle with Universal and their dinosaurs, but Inside Out took the fight to them taking a cool $91 million. That weekend haul earned the new animated feature second place in the box office standings, as well as the second best opening for any Pixar movie, slotting behind Toy Story 3, which earned $110.3 million in its debut. However, Inside Out does land the honour of being Pixar's biggest original movie debut ever.

Another debutant this weekend was Rick Famuyiwa's coming-of-age story Dope, which made waves earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival. The movie opened to a fairly decent $6 million from 2,002 theatres with it struggling to stand-up against the forces of Inside Out and Jurassic World. Dope finished the weekend in fifth place, but word of mouth and strong reviews will help this movie make steady money in the coming weeks.

Other movies, similar to last weekend, had mere scraps to feast on. Paul Feig and Melissa McCarthy's Spy which took $10.5 million falling a small 33 percent from last week. It's total gross currently stands at $74 million. Earthquake drama San Andreas finished in fourth place with an estimated $8.2 million brining its total gross to $132 million domestically.
