Alicia Vikander journeys into the unknown in the first TOMB RAIDER trailer

GregHarmon GregHarmon Managing Editor Death is an adventure in Lara Croft's latest

Warner Bros. Pictures and MGM dropped the first official trailer for Roar Uthaug's (The Wave) Tomb Raider reboot. The latest iteration comes 16 years after Angelina Jolie's big screen portrayal of the video game adventurer and features Oscar-wining actress Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft.

The trailer starts out as your typical origin affair, shedding light on the 21 year-old Lara Croft who refuses to take over the reigns of her archaeologist father's "global empire" despite having been missing for seven years. Advised to face the facts and move forward, Lara unlocks a key to solve the puzzle of her dad's last-known destination - a fabled tomb on a mythical island somewhere in the middle of the devil's sea.

Lara's father Richard Croft (Dominic West) reveals that the mythical tomb ominously called "The Mother of Death" must not be discovered by a group led by baddie Walton Goggins or else the world will be in danger. What exactly that means remains a mystery but we'll go with it. The trailer quickly shifts from 'origin' story to 'seasoned badass' affair as we see Vikander's fiercely independent Lara Croft take on Goggins menacing group of explorers in a race to save humanity.
