Lucasfilm is Planning Future 'Star Wars' Spinoffs

ZachPerilstein ZachPerilstein Disney Reporter Lucasfilm is getting serious about more Star Wars spinoffs. They are planning on having many meetings throughout the year to discuss possible spinoffs. Rogue One was a huge gamble and it paid off significantly. Rogue One had critical success and made over $1 billion at the box office. Next year's Han Solo film will be a even bigger test for the studio.

There is definite interest in Star Wars stories outside of the Skywalker family. Spinoffs rumored are a Obi-Wan, Boba Fett, and a young adult romance story. Lucasfilm will announce the film that's coming out in 2020 this summer. The latest reports say Sam Esmail, the creator of Mr. Robot, is going to work on a standalone script. Lucasfilm is getting together to lay out plans for post Episode IX.

The script reading for Colin Trevorrow's Episode IX is happening fairly soon according to Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy. This is her full statement: “To be honest, we are beginning to talk about [the spinoffs] right now. We have four or five weeks immersed in the film ‘Han Solo’ and we are about to read the script of Colin Trevorrow’s Episode IX directed, so we have a lot of work at the moment. In the next six or eight months we will have some meetings about the stories that we will develop here. After 40 years of adventures, fans have so much information and so many theories about the way that can take these stories and theories that emerge are sometimes new ideas for us that we hear, read and pay attention to everything what is said. It is clear that the franchise is owned by the as much by the fans as it’s owned by [the people at Lucasfilm].”

Lucasfilm is hard at work with The Last Jedi, which hits theaters December 15, 2017. The following year the young Han Solo film comes out. They also have Episode IX, which is in pre-production. Decisions have to be made regarding General Leia Organa for Episode IX. And it's exciting we have confirmation for a new film announcement coming out this summer.

I'm willing to bet that the Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars Story film will be announced at Disney's D23 Expo this summer, during the Star Wars panel. And if these meetings go well, maybe they'll announce more?
