'Mad Max' and 'Pitch Perfect 2' Both Aiming to End 'Avengers' Reign This Weekend

JamesArthurArmstrong JamesArthurArmstrong The Box Office just got interesting for the first time this year. Warner Bros' Mad Max: Fury Road and Universal's Pitch Perfect 2 are both planning to takeover Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron top spot at the Box Office this weekend.

Both Mad Max and Pitch Perfect are looking to net themselves approximately $40 million each, but there is a possibility all three could reach those figures, although that is unlikely. Predictions suggest Age of Ultron will slip to third position, with the slight edge for first place currently leaning to Pitch Perfect 2, which is outpacing Fury Road in terms of pre-sales, according to Fandango.

The original Pitch Perfect built up a cult following on home entertainment platforms, and the sequel should have little trouble in attracting those fans to the second film and trumping the first film’s $115 million worldwide gross.

However, Mad Max could well speed ahead of Pitch Perfect this weekend with pre-sales not necessarily determining the outcome. Mad Max has been pushed in strong promotional materials, received plenty of positive reviews from critics, and is getting a ton of buzz on blogger sites.

Regardless of which movie comes out on top, Pitch Perfect 2 will be the overall winner — simply triumphing in profit margins. Pitch Perfect 2 was made for a slender (within in the world of modern day filmmaking) $29 million, whilst Fury Road was made for a hefty $150 million after years of delays. And, it's these delays that may go against Fury Road. It's been 25 years between movies, Mel Gibson isn't reprising his role, and marketeers are promoting it almost like a new property, not the next chapter in the franchise.

It's nice to finally have a Box Office battle to ponder over, and who'd of thought it would've been between Mad Max and Pitch Perfect 2? Both have their positives and negatives which makes it intriguing. Both have pre-existing fan bases and both offer moviegoers totally different experiences. So far, 2015 has been dominated by two movies — Furious 7 and Avengers: Age of Ultron — with neither movie really crossing each others paths. It's safe to say Avengers will lose its top spot this weekend, but to which film, is the big question?
