Gary Oldman is a versatile actor that has played every conceivable role type there is to play, hero or villain he is always in command of his role. Time after however he has been passed over for his work, but this year he is the leading man in a movie with some real Oscar buzz, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. The film adaptation to the great spy novel of the same named penned by John Le Carre. Considered by many scholars to be the best spy novel ever written, John Le Carre’s smash hit novel was made into a BBC mini-series in the 70’s, but has now been made into a major motion picture starring Gary Oldman, Oscar winner Colin Firth, and up and coming soon to be mega star Tom Hardy. I have read the book, and while at times it can be a bit long winded (what British novel isn’t?) it perfectly blends suspense, intelligence, and has enough twists and turns to make it well worth the ride. This isn’t a James Bond type spy thriller; it is very much a thinking person’s story. The whole story is a game of chess, with every single move, no matter how subtle or unassuming is important to the outcome. As each pawn, rook, and bishop is moved and taken, the picture becomes more muddled then ever.

“There’s a mole at the
top of British intelligence”

That line is what kicks off the trailer, and from there the picture is set. Gary Oldman a retired intelligence officer is asked to discover the spy and out him, no matter whom it is, no matter how powerful that person is within the British spy network. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy might sound like a run of the mill Cold War Era spy thriller, but just remember one thing when you are watching it, it is what invented the “modern” spy thriller. This story is the godfather to all great Cold War Era spy stories. It will have you guessing and doubting everyone and every action. Finally, the greatest spy story ever written will have its day on the big screen. The BBC mini-series was good, but is nothing compared to what we will see in this movie. The collection of talent for this movie is a proverbial who’s who of British actors, and at the center is the underappreciated and often overlooked Gary Oldman. One thing is for certain, the Academy cannot ignore or overlook Gary Oldman this year, and if they do, it will be a travesty.
