Margot Robbie's 'Birds of Prey' sets a February 2020 release; adds Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollet-Bell

GregHarmon GregHarmon Managing Editor Warner Bros. untitled 'Birds of Prey' will release just three months after Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman 1984 and four months after Joaquin Phoenix's Joker standalone.

The previously billed "Harley Quinn" standalone is officially scheduled for release on February 7, 2020. Warner Bros. also announced Margot Robbie's badass "girl gang" will star actors Jurnee Smollet-Bell and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Prey's core crime fighting heroines.

Sources at Variety confirm Friday Night Lights Jurnee Smollett-Bell has landed the role of Gotham's world class street fighter - Dinah Lance a/k/a Black Canary, and 10 Cloverfield Lane's Mary Elizabeth Winstead has landed the role of Gotham's fierce female vigilante - Helena Bertinelli a/k/a Huntress.

Warner Bros. untitled 'Birds of Prey' is set to make history as filmmaker Cathy Yan will become the first female Asian American to direct a superhero film, and second female next to Patty Jenkins to helm a DC project. According to Deadline, the former Ivy league grad and Wall Street Journalist-turned-filmmaker wowed Warner Bros. and DC brass with an “exceptional” pitch based on DC’s Birds of Prey series.

DC's late 2019, early 2020 slate sounds so promising on paper yet I'm still blown away by the fact none of the aforementioned films (Wonder Woman, Joker, The Batman) will exist in the same universe. Maybe that’s a good thing?

'Birds of Prey' will go up against Sony’s Peter Rabbit 2 and Paramount’s animated feature The Loud House.
