Miles Teller joins the cast of "Top Gun 2"

GregHarmon GregHarmon Managing Editor The search for Goose’s son is over.

After testing actors for several weeks - including finalists Glen Powell and Nicholas Hoult - sources close to Variety confirm Miles Teller has won the role to portray Nick “Goose” Bradshaw’s (Anthony Edwards) son in Paramount and Skydance’s “Top Gun” sequel.

Teller made the official announcement quote tweeting Variety with “I Feel The Need”.

The 31-year-old star is set to join Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer, reprising their iconic roles as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell and Tom "Iceman" Kazansky, in a story that will mark the end of the era of dogfighting featuring fifth generation fighters. According to sources at That Hashtag Show, Goose’s son is described as a handsome all-American athlete who follows in his father’s footsteps joining the Naval academy - presumably at Miramar's Top Gun school. And despite being Maverick’s “new protege” as Variety reported, Goose’s son has a deep seeded distrust of Maverick and dislikes what he stands for.

While Teller made his announcement official, the other son-of-Goose finalist, Glen Powell, made his announcement official tweeting ❝I’m taking down all the Tom Cruise posters in my bedroom. Maybe, I’ll leave one. Two for symmetry. Okay, the posters are staying.❞

As someone who is NOT a casting expert much less an actor/producer who can sniff out talent - aka Tom Cruise - I’m bummed Powell was not the chosen one. And that’s not for a lack of respect based on Teller's past performances. As we’ve seen in The Spectacular Now, Bleed For This, and Whiplash, Teller is a talented actor who, in the right role does coming-of-age well amid daunting circumstances.

With "Top Gun 2" a little over a month into production, its inevitable additional casting decisions will be revealed in the coming weeks. I'm curious to see who plays "Penny Benjamin" - yep the same "Admiral's daughter" Goose whispers to Maverick in Top Gun. I’m also curious to see who plays Penny's daughter "Miriam," and supporting female lead pilot "Sugar" - Calling Gina Rodriguez.

Stay tune for more casting news!
