Murtaugh and Riggs are Back for a Lethal Weapon TV-Reboot
So yeah...Lethal Weapon, apparently is going to have a television adaptation. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox recently handed out a hefty commitment for a "put-pilot" which is a pilot that the network has agreed to air either as a special or series. If the network does not air the pilot episode, the network will owe substantial monetary penalties to the studio. Generally, this guarantees that the pilot will be picked up by the network. Essentially, this means that if the pilot is not picked up by Fox, they will owe some big fines to Warner Bros TV, the studio producing the show.
This new trend of movie-to-tv reboots seems both good and bad. Daredevil, for instance, has received a fantastic reception especially when compared to the movie. But that doesn't hold true for all reboots, 10 Things I Hate About You may have been a 90's classic, but it failed to draw viewers as a television show and it quickly fell into the land of cancelled network shows(where do they go really...?). But hey, i hope it is good, many of us grew up with the franchise and it holds a special place in our hearts.
Which may just be its biggest hurdle that it needs to overcome to be successful. According to RollingStone the show will follow Riggs and Murtaugh, but will include a more serious tone. Riggs will now be a former Texas cop and ex-Navy Seal who movies to Los Angeles after the death of his wife and child while Murtaugh has to avoid stress after suffering a minor heart attack (if heart attacks can ever really be "minor"). So unfortunately, we might miss the lighter-tone of the original movies where Riggs was just...well... bat-shit insane. But at least we might get to hear the classic "I'm too old for this shit"-line from Murtaugh!
And according to The Hollywood Reporter, this is just the tip of the iceberg for up-and-coming movie-to-tv reboots. Fox is prepping a Behind Enemy Lines series, CBS has Training Day and Rush Hour shows in development, ABC's Uncle Buck will arrive in the coming months and the CW has plans for both Friday the 13th and The Notebook series. And that is excluding more recent reboots like Limitless, Bate-Motel, Fargo, 12 Monkeys, Scream or Minority Report, so I doubt this trend is going to end anytime soon especially if a handful of these shows are a success.
