Ridley Scott Looking at Western Remake of South Korean Horror Film 'The Wailing'

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell Netflix is currently streaming Na Hong-Jin's horror epic The Wailing. And at 156 minutes long, it's got plenty of love behind it. So, naturally, it's being eyed for a remake in the U.S. Ridley Scott's Scott Free Productions is looking at the rights to an adaptation, though Kim Ho-Sung, the head of Fox International Productions Korea, and producer on the film, isn't convinced in his revealing interview with Screen Daily.

"They said The Wailing reminded them of films such as The Exorcist, The Ring and Seven. The locality and sensibility of The Wailing is so strong that I don’t think it would be easy to do a Western remake, and it will be important who directs it. So I told him I think the only director who could do the remake is Na Hong-jin. But we are still in early stages of talks. […] We’re being careful. As you know, there are a lot of remakes out there being developed [that haven’t come to fruition]."

Whether or not a remake is necessary, that's never stopped anyone before. Expect a completely different film, given everything I've read and heard about the original.
