'Spawn' Creator Completes Script for Film Reboot

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell In the 90s, the comic book movie was in the learning-to-walk phase, and it showed. There are plenty of examples of bad films that could have led to the end of the comic adaptation before the boom began. Fortunately, Hollywood never says never.

Spawn was one of those properties who received a sub-par treatment on the big screen. The comic book, created by Todd McFarlane, is a darker, edgier franchise, and the character an anti-hero who makes a deal with a demon to order to escape Hell and return to Earth for revenge.

The film didn't do poorly at the box office, but it certainly hasn't aged well. McFarlane has for some time wished to make a new one, and speaking with Comicbook.com, he's announced completion on a script to reboot the Spawn property for a new age of cinema-goers.

McFarlane hopes to direct himself, with a modest budget, but knows there's work to be done. "I've finished the script, and I'm in the process of editing. It's 183 pages, and [producers] usually like 120. I still think it's going to end up being about 140, because I'm putting in details for myself."

Considering he said similar things to Screen Rant in 2013, with intent on completing a script by that year's end and beginning production in 2014, his comments need to be taken with a grain of salt.
