Spider-Man: Homecoming

Spider-Man: Homecoming opens with a quick origin story of its antagonist, Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes aka Vulture. With his roots out of the way, little time is devoted to unravelling the genesis of key components of the story. Instead, director John Watts oversees what was promised – a proper high school coming-of-age vibe sporting authentic teen characters in a film that just happened to centre on a kid who was bitten by a radioactive spider.

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) - Review

Spider-Man solidifies his homecoming to the MCU. — Following the creation of two separate Spider-Man film series, the Sam Raimi trilogy staring Tobey Maguire that ran from 2002 - 2007 and the two Amazing Spider-Man films starring Andrew Garfield from 2012 and 2014, Sony Pictures struck a deal in early 2015 with Marvel Studios to co-produce a new iteration of the iconic Marvel Comics character following the less than stellar critical success of the Garfield films. Sony have owned the film rights to Spider-Man since the late '90s after they passed between various studios and production companies. Whilst the first two Raimi films were a huge success, the third film was something of an overstuffed mess and although financially successful, Raimi and Maguire wanted nothing more to do with the series and it was left dead in the water. Sony tried to successfully create a wider Spider-Man universe with other planned spin-off films branching off the two that formed the Andrew Garfield reboot but the poor critical and fan reception they received, especially the second one, put paid to this.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is directed by Jon Watts (Cop Car) and stars Tom Holland (The Impossible, Captain America: Civil War), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man, Sherlock Holmes), Zendaya (Shake It Up!) and Laura Harrier. "Several months after the events of Captain America: Civil War, Peter Parker, with the help of his mentor Tony Stark, tries to balance his life as an ordinary high school student in Queens, New York City while fighting crime as his superhero alter ego Spider-Man as a new threat, the Vulture, emerges". Third time's the charm? With the guidance of Marvel, can Sony finally perfect Spider-Man?

First reactions to SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING are overwhelmingly positive

We have our first round of critic reactions to 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' courtesy of Twitter. — At first glance, 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' appears to be a "spectacle" that's "delightful" "fun" and "funny." And frankly none of this comes as a surprise given the positive reaction to Tom Holland's Spidey in Captain America: Civil War coupled with Robert Downey Jr's quasi-big brother, mentor-to-mentee relationship with "Tony Stark/Iron Man". But with a little over two weeks until 'Homecoming's' release, it will be interesting to see what if any negatives come about as more pre-release screenings roll out. If this keeps up, it appears that Sony's reboot is primed for a huge July 7 release.

"Spider-Man: Homecoming" Adds Donald Glover

Donald Glover has joined the cast of Spider-Man: Homecoming in an unspecified role. The former Community star and creator/star of the upcoming FX series Atlanta voices Miles Morales/Ultimate Spider-Man on the Disney XD animated series Ultimate Spider-Man. His role on that show will probably lead to speculation about any possible connections/easter eggs to Miles Morales in the live action movie universe. But once again, Glover's role has not been revealed.
