'Stranger Things 2' Ending Explained and Possible Season Three Set Ups

ZachPerilstein ZachPerilstein Disney Reporter Stranger Things comes back as charming as it was in its first season. During this second season the show becomes darker and grittier. The Upside Down starts to become more of a threat in more ways then one. This season Will Byers and the rest of his family and friends went into some interesting storyline arcs.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

Stranger Things season two heavily focuses on the connection between the small town of Hawkins and the ominous Upside Down. The connection allowed The Mind Flayer to strike fear and terror into Hawkins.

The Mind Flayer attacks in multiple ways for example through Will Byer and through creating a small army of Demodogs, dog-like Demogorgons. As The Mind Flayer tries to take over Will Byers body. Joyce, Jonathan, and Nancy try to find ways to knock it out of him. Eventually they do with using tons of heat. It was mentioned earlier that The Mind Flayer didn't like warmth.

During this time when Will is dealing with the internal battle of The Mind Flayer. Detective Jim Hopper takes Eleven to the Hawkins National Laboratory to finally close the gate which connects Hawkins with the Upside Down. Meanwhile, the second group that consists of Mike, Dustin, Lucas, Max, and Steve head into the dark tunnels of the Upside Down to provide a diversion for Eleven and also Will. The group goes to a central point and lights it on fire. Essentially The Mind Flayer's brain was being burnt. Out of nowhere a Demodog corners the group. To the relief of the viewers it was just Dart. The slimy Demodog, Dustin found in his trash earlier in the season. Dart lets the friends walk away fine. The moment was still very suspenseful.

After realizing the distraction The Mind Flayer brings all his Demodogs back to the gateway but they weren't enough to stop Eleven and Hopper. Eleven then unlocked new potential out of her psychic powers and closed the gate. She was using so much force she was elevating (possibly hinting at a new power for her in season 3?)

Stranger Things season two ends with a time jump of one month. It is now the holiday season. Here is where all the characters end up in the season two finale. Will returns back to his normal life and a girl even asks him to dance at the Snow Ball. Lucas and Max end up together at the Snow Ball leaving Dustin out of the love triangle. Earlier in the night Steve Harrington drops Dustin off at the Snow Ball as their friendship continues to bloom. Dustin even mimicked Steve's hair for the dance. Dustin ends up dancing with Nancy Wheeler at the Snow Ball so his night turns out for the better. Jonathan Byers and Nancy Wheeler are now together but Steve Harrington looks like he still has feelings for "Nance." Detective Jim Hopper and Joyce Byers were flirting all season although Joyce was deeply in love with hero Bob "The Brain" Newby (Sean Astin of The Goonies.). The two share a cigarette outside of the Snow Ball. Mike and Eleven get to enjoy the dance together and they eventually kiss. Fantastic we get a true love storyline on Stranger Things. Eleven might get more freedom in season three.

The season ends with the camera tipping to the Upside Down showing The Mind Flayer haunting and looking over Hawkins Middle School. So where does this leave us for season three of Stranger Things?

The Mind Flayer now knows of the kids. He has a new target in mind, and that is Eleven for closing the gate. The Mind Flayer also discovered the powers of Eleven. This could become an incredible dynamic in the third season.

The Duffer Brothers also confirmed that the Hawkins Lab storyline is officially finished. (That could of been picked up when in the season two finale the military was invading the lab, and the conspiracy theory character was waving goodbye at them.) Certain members of the town might be vulnerable to the Upside Down still like Hopper and Dustin who contracted mucus. That could be a potentially dark element for season three. We saw what the Upside Down did to Will hopefully that doesn't happen to Dustin or Hopper! The Mind Flayer has the ability to take form in different things because it's a virus. So is The Mind Flayer truly that big monster we saw at the end of the season two finale or is The Mind Flayer still waiting in the shadows waiting for the perfect moment to reveal itself?

Stranger Things season three is already in the works. No premiere date has been set.

This is probably my first of many Stranger Things articles on Cultjer. So get ready for some fun material coming your way.
