Streaming Outages as 'Game of Thrones' Season Premiere Boosts HBO Now Apps
HBO has seen massive success with their standalone streaming service HBO Now with the premiere of Game of Thrones season 6.
According to new data from mobile app data intelligence startup Apptopia, HBO Now's iOS app surpassed Netflix's iOS app to become the top-ranked entertainment app on the Apple store on Sunday.
HBO's app had 25,395 downloads on Sunday, compared to an average of 12,000 downloads per day during the month preceding the premiere. A year ago, on the season 5 premiere day, HBO Now gathered 19,581 downloads. That record hadn't been broken until now.
As a result, a number of users of HBO Now and HBO's Go service have struggled with outages, with Downdetector.com registering more than 3200 complaints on social media.
“There was a small number of HBO NOW subscribers receiving an error message. The problem was quickly recognized and resolved. Overall, both HBO GO and HBO NOW remained stable under unprecedented traffic," a HBO spokesperson has said in a statement.
