'Ted 2' Disappoints Whilst 'Jurassic World' Fends Off 'Inside Out' to Remain Number One

JamesArthurArmstrong JamesArthurArmstrong Disney-Pixar's Inside Out was unable to dethrone the record breaking Jurassic World at the domestic box office after a close fought race as the dino adventure blockbuster finished its third consecutive week at the number one spot.

Seth MacFarlene's R-rated sequel, Ted 2, failed to capture audiences attention with a disappointing third place finish. The pot-smoking teddy bear limped in with $32.9 million, falling short of its predicted opening weekend of around $47 million. It was always going to be tough for the comedy sequel to out-do Universal's dinosaurs and Pixar's latest family adventure, but with those numbers, it's clear that Ted 2 lost valuable momentum ahead of its release. The original Ted earned an impressive $54 million debut on its way to a mighty $549.4 million in global revenue. With Ted 2 expected to be this summer's biggest comedy, Universal has cited "sequel-itis" as a major reason for the underwhelming start.

Jurassic World is now the fifth highest-grossing domestic release of all time and the fastest to reach the $500 million milestone. It added another $54.2 million to its monstrous total this past weekend in a hotly contested battle with Inside Out.

The Disney-Pixar animated feature looked on course to topple Jurassic World at one point on Friday evening, edging ever so slightly ahead. However, the dinosaurs roared back and nipped ahead on Saturday and Sunday. Inside Out managed to draw in $52.1 million this weekend, taking its domestic tally to $184.9 million after two weeks in theatres.

Another newcomer, Max, a patriotic drama about a military dog, secured fourth place with a debut of $12.2 million, while Paul Feig's latest comedy, Spy, amassed $7.8 million to round out the top five.
