Terrence Malick's 'Song to Song' Set to Open South by Southwest Festival

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell Terrence Malick's upcoming romance pic Song to Song will make its world premiere at South by Southwest on opening night, March 10.

The film boasts a stellar cast including Rooney Mara, Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender and Natalie Portman, and is described as a modern love story set against the Austin music scene. It follows two couples - one, a pair of struggling songwriters, the other a musical mogul and the waitress he has ensnared.

Filming began way back in 2012. “Terrence Malick is a world class revered cinematic poet. His work is a treasure trove of talented actors and vision,” said Janet Pierson, SXSW’s director of film. “Set in the world of music and Austin, Song to Song couldn’t be a more perfect Opening Night film for SXSW.”

Neil Gaiman's American Gods will premiere its TV adaptation at the festival, while Jeff Malmberg and Chris Shellen's Spettacolo will premiere. Signature Move, Jennifer Reeder's coming-of-age Muslim pic will debut, as well as Rene Perez Joglar's Residente.

“While these titles are just a taste of what SXSW 2017 will offer, they reflect the range of work we are known for, from newcomers and auteurs to pop entertainment in traditional cinema, episodics and now VR,” Pierson said.
