The Academy Adds Popular Film Category, Broadcast to Become Three Hours

ZachPerilstein ZachPerilstein Disney Reporter The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is making sweeping changes for future Oscars ceremonies. In a effort to bolster ratings, and to connect to a mainstream audience.

The Oscars are also creating a new category called "Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film." Over the past years, mainstream audiences have grown distance from the Oscars. Due to The Academy's love of the arthouse world. Fancier films like Moonlight and The Shape of Water have won "Best Picture." Films like Wonder Woman, Kingsman, and Guardians of the Galaxy would of been nominated for "Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film."

The 2018 Oscars were the least watched Oscars to date. So there plan to make the show three hours will include cutting screen time for all of the categories. The 2020 Oscars telecast will air earlier on February 9. The 2019 Oscars will still stay in their normal spot of February 24.

Popcorn films now have their own category. Lower grossing films usually took most of the nominations for Best Picture. It will be interesting to see how The Academy votes on these categories.
