Alexander Payne, Shailene Woodley and George Clooney talk about the story of The Descendants

Behind the scenes of Alexander Payne's The Descendants.

Alexander Payne: (writer/director): I just read the book and I thought, okay, I can make a movie out of this. I was desperate to make a movie. I could service it well as a writer and a director. As a reader I liked the basic emotional story, I guess. Of the guy whos wife is in a come. I'd never seen that in a movie before.

Matt King: 23 days ago my wife was launched from a powerboat and hit her head. I'd always been the back-up parent.

You have to help me with her. I don't know what to do with her.

And with Elizabeth in the hospital, my daughter has been testing me.

Look, whatever you two fought about, you have to drop it. Grow up. You really don't have a clue do you? Mam was cheating.

George Clooney: I've been a father in several films. And I've been a husband in several films. But this one was very different. Because it was a much more emotional and attached to the family. And I found it challenging only in the sense that I wanted to be able to serve the material very well. It's a tricky piece, you know. It's kind of like a coming of age film. Unfortunately the person who's coming of age is a 50-year-old man.

Shailene Woodley also talks about her character Alexandra King and acting with George Clooney.
