Jason Bateman talks about how three colors make one in Horrible Bosses
Jason Bateman: There's a lot of improvisation in the movie. Only after we get what's written. Because what's written is great, it's why we're all here. So we make sure that we do that and afterwards, again, since it's a three-headed thing. And it's in the three-shot, where we're all in it together, you can talk over one another and sort of get that conversational rhythm. That when people naturally talk over each other. That you can't do when you single people off. But if you have it in a group, you can really find those rhythms and things like that. So we do a lot of that. I don't know how much of that is gonna show up in the movie, but there's some funny stuff in there that I'm sure Seth will cherry pick.
Seth's a very, very nice person. And as boring as that sounds, it's so important on a set. Especially on a comedy, when you want to keep things light and you want to feel sort of, it's cliche, but you wanna feel save. Because comedy is kind of making a fool of yourself. And you don't really get a lot of laughs when you don't pull your pants down. So you want to feel save to make dumb ideas or say or do dumb things and he keeps a very nice set. There's no yelling and he's a great leader and he's just a kind man and he happens to be talented. So I really have loved every day of it.
The writers did a really great job of creating that three-headed beast and we, the three of us, I think, I hope found a way to kind of. I don't want to make hacky analogies, but here it goes. With a TV when you have a red, a green and a blue color and it makes all the other colors. We kind of figured out who was gonna do each one. So when the three of us are together, it becomes one character I guess. And Seth Gordon, the director, figured out very early to always shoot it in a three-shot and not use a lot of singles. Because it is kind of one character, the three of us together.
