Zoe Saldana talks about what makes Cataleya in Colombiana

Zoe Saldana: It's almost like there's this anger and this purpose that has calcified. And it's become rock-solid, like hard. And that is the only thing that keeps her moving, is this purpose. It's to find the people that did that, killed her family. And I don't think she's even thinking about what she's gonna do after that. She doesn't even think that far. That is the only thing that she feels that she's existing for, still. So there's a stillness to her. But I think now as an adult, there's this humanity that she has suppressed for so long. But it's inevitable, because we are human. And she feels alone. So there are many ghosts that are haunting her, but she can't stop. She's sort of like a little Terminator. And those are the things that I found very intimidating when I was reading up on her and doing my research and sort of bring her to life. I feel like if I were to stand next to a person, an individual like that, I would be completely freaked out. Because she's just so still.

Zoe Saldana on The Meaning of Cataleya

Cataleya is a very unique flower that only grows in Colombia and a certain region of Colombia. So obviously he named her that, because that's his only child. His only daughter. And he knew from the beginning I guess that she was very unique. And she always had I feel like more similarities, more things in common with her father than she did with her mother. And yes, so I think that name totally suits her.

Zoe Saldana on Character Training for Colombiana

Her uncle is a thug, in reality. So was her father. People that did odd jobs and worked for organizations that where sort of more mafioso than legal and corporate or anything. Or political. So therefor her level of training would be more, how do I say it. Less graceful, and more animal. And volatile. So she's very much like a Molotov cocktail of weapon training and fight training. But that she didn't learn it in a professional school or anything. It was her uncle just teaching her what he had learned. So I knew that. So that pretty much eliminates any martial arts or any kind of gun handling that would make me look like I've trained with a police force or a military force or the navy or whatever. And that actually gave me so much more room for me to find my own way. And created my own rhythm that I wanted to have when I dealt with guns and knifes and things like that.

Zoe Saldana also talks about what audiences can expect and Michael Vartan's character.
