What Movies Will Have Super Bowl Commercials?

JamesArthurArmstrong JamesArthurArmstrong If you haven't heard, this coming Sunday is Super Bowl XLIX between Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots. As those two teams battle it out on the field to be crowned champions, major movie studios do battle on the screen to plug their upcoming movies during the commercials.

It's a yearly tradition that during the intervals in the game we are handed a sleuth of new trailers and TV spots hyping up some of the biggest movies that'll be released in the coming weeks and months. For a 30-second commercial slot it costs $4.5 million for that air time. A lot of money, right? But when you realise that an estimated 184 million people (in the U.S. alone) will be watching, you can't blame studios for paying that sort of money. No other time of the year offers that kind of guaranteed audience figure.

So, what trailers and TV spots can you expect to see this Sunday? Well, that's the big question. We are only told a few in advance. Below is a list of those that have been confirmed by Deadline, along with a few that may find a spot during the game.

Confirmed super bowl trailers

tomorrowland

Synopsis: Bound by a shared destiny, a teen bursting with scientific curiosity and a former boy-genius inventor embark on a mission to unearth the secrets of a place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory.

'Tomorrowland' Super Bowl Teaser Trailer

jurassic world

Synopsis: Twenty-two years after the events of Jurassic Park (1993), Isla Nublar now features a fully functioning dinosaur theme park, Jurassic World, as originally envisioned by John Hammond. After 10 years of operation and visitor rates declining, in order to fulfill a corporate mandate, a new attraction is created to re-spark visitor's interest, which backfires horribly.

TED 2

Synopsis: Newlywed couple Ted and Tami-Lynn want to have a baby, but in order to qualify to be a parent, Ted will have to prove he's a person in a court of law.

Note: There are unconfirmed rumours that the second trailer for Ted 2 that will air during the Super Bowl will feature Tom Brady (Quarterback for New England Patriots). It's been said he'll feature in the scene where Mark Wahlberg (who's a Patriots fan) is donating sperm to help Ted and his wife conceive. You can see a snippet of that scene in the first trailer for Ted 2 (below).

Minions

Synopsis: Minions Stuart, Kevin and Bob are recruited by Scarlet Overkill, a super-villain who, alongside her inventor husband Herb, hatches a plot to take over the world.

terminator genisys

Synopsis: After finding himself in a new time-line, Kyle Reese teams up with John Connor's mother Sarah and an aging terminator to try and stop the one thing that the future fears, "Judgement Day".

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water

Synopsis: SpongeBob goes on a quest to discover a stolen recipe that takes him to our dimension, our world, where he tangles with a pirate.

Insurgent

Synopsis: Beatrice Prior must confront her inner demons and continue her fight against a powerful alliance which threatens to tear her society apart with the help from others on her side.

Note: The new trailer for Insurgent will only air during the pre-game build up. This is a considerably lower price slot in the commercial structure for the Super Bowl broadcast.

kingsman: the secret service

Synopsis: Based upon the acclaimed comic book and directed by Matthew Vaughn, Kingsman: The Secret Service tells the story of a super-secret spy organisation that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency's ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.

Note: The same applies for Kingsman: The Secret Service trailer as it does with Insurgent; this will be a pre-game trailer.

unconfirmed super bowl trailers

There is always a catalogue of rumours swirling around this time of year regarding what trailers will air during the Super Bowl. Like most years, there tends to always be a bonafide blockbuster movie thrust into our laps during a commercial break. Last year we saw The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Transformers: Age of Extinction dominate the transmission, in particular, the latter. But for big franchises, is it worth paying that $4.5 million for 30-seconds of TV time when you're already an established and well liked franchise?

Below is three possible additions to the above list of confirmed trailers. We don't expect to see all of them (with one being a bit of a long-shot) but maybe one will find its way onto our small screens this Sunday.

avengers: age of ultron

Avengers: Age of Utron released a new trailer earlier this month, so it seems unlikely we'll see another one any time soon. Also, Marvel recently released a TV spot for the movie only yesterday. Are they prepared to folk out the money to have it aired during the big game? Unlikely. But then again, Disney and Marvel may feel like reminding us how they'll dominate the 2015 box office.

Below is the new TV spot for Avengers: Age of Ultron;

star wars: episode Vii - the force awakens

It's known that a new trailer for J.J. Abrams's Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be unveiled alongside Avengers: Age of Ultron in May, but it's not impossible that Disney will choose to unveil a new trailer beforehand. The likelihood of another Star Wars trailer this far removed from its release date is a long-shot, but who knows?

batman vs. superman: dawn of justice

Rumours have circulated that a trailer for Zack Snyder's Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice will be attached to the upcoming Jupiter Ascending, or even Mad Max: Fury Road. But with the big game fast approaching, speculation is rumbling that Warner Bros will debut the Batman vs Superman trailer during the Super Bowl— wouldn't that be interesting?
