Is This the Closest Best Picture Race in Years?

Academy Hosts Board Meeting Next Week in Wake of Worldwide #OscarsSoWhite Controversy

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell Next week, the Academy holds a board meeting which could see some major changes take place, from leadership to membership requirements, even to the categories themselves.

The image of the Academy is under fire, and there's nothing more important in the entertainment industry that thrives on its face. Their January 26th meeting will work its way through the debris to try and begin cleansing its name, as it fights against perceptions of racism and elitist allegations being thrown its way.

With no nominees of colour, outside of Alejandro Inarritu's Best Director nomination, in the major awards categories, insiders are predicting a revival of 10 best picture contenders following this years debacle (which would have allowed, this year at least, Straight Outta Compton a deserved place). Others theorise that the voting system may get some serious fine tuning.

Other members would like to see the acting categories include more than five nominees, allowing for performances like Will Smith in Concussion and Idris Elba in Beats of No Nation to avoid being overlooked in the future.

Though, the problems may run deeper in the eyes of those heavily against the Academy for these issues. Some may see this as a means to sneak some of these performers or films in with extra nominee places, filling out the bench instead of genuinely competing.

On Jan 18, President Cheryl Boone Isaacs said that the Academy is "taking dramatic steps to alter the makeup of our membership." She's said a lot since this all began, and as always, it's easier to do so than to actually act on it. Here's hoping this mess is cleaned up quickly.
