Biopic on 'Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit' Author J.R.R. Tolkien in Development
J.R.R. Tolkien is one of the most revered and respected writers out of the 20th century, and many consider his works some of if not the best fiction written in its century. The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings have become feature film blockbusters to varying degrees of success, but it all started with Tolkien telling his children bedtime stories about a hobbit who lived in a hole in the ground.
New Line Cinema is developing a biopic based on the life of Tolkien, with James Strong attached to direct the project. Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne will produce, while the script has been written by Angus Fletcher.
The film, titled Middle Earth, will follow Tolkien's early life, including his relationship with his wife and his experiences in the war that led to the tale of The Lord of the Rings. Given that Tolkien began creating the world of Middle Earth and beyond while in the trenches during World War I, there's a stirring tale to be told about the man.
