Bryan Fuller Reveals New Details for Star Trek Discovery.

NadiaA71 NadiaA71 Star Trek Discovery's showrunner Bryan Fuller has just shared a lot of details at the TCA's CBS All Access panel. Here are the the main points for the upcoming scifi series:

The show will have a female lead and while she is not yet cast, the lead may or may not be a woman of color. Fuller also stated that unlike the other Star Trek series, the lead is not a captain. "Lt. Commander..with caveats" Fuller replied when asked about the rank. "We've seen six series from captain's point of view, to see a character from a different perspective on the starship, one who has a different dynamic with the captain, with subordinates, it gave us richer context"

In continuing with past Star Trek tradition the cast will be diverse including an LGBT character. "Absolutely we're having a gay character" said Fuller. The series will also include more aliens than in other Trek series. And oh, there will be robots.

The timeline for the show is set 10 years before the Original Series and it will be in the 'prime universe' - as opposed to the 'Kelvin timeline' which was created in the JJ Abrams films. "That allows us to bridge the gap between 'Enterprise' and the original series and redefine the visual style of the universe"

During the San Diego Comic Con Fuller had revealed that the first season of Star Trek Discovery will have 13 episodes and while it will have standalone episodes, it will be part of one story. At the TCA panel however, the showrunner remains mysterious as to what the show will be about. "There's an incident in the history of Starfleet that had been talked about in the past but never fully explored" he said. According to Variety, this incident is not the Romulan Wars or the Kobayashi Maru or Black Ops Section 31 though the Fuller hinted that the latter might make an appearance.

Fuller also said that there is a possibility in the second season that younger characters from TOS may appear including Spock's mother Amanda Grayson.

When asked about casting Fuller said that he is reaching out to actors he's worked with in the past and to see if their schedules would permit. Filming will start in two months and the pilot will air on CBS in January. The rest of the series however will air on CBS All Access in the US and Canada. For outside U.S. and Canada, Netflix have secured the rights to stream the show internationally.
