Disney Not Prioritising Live Action Star Wars Series Just Yet

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell If fans were hoping that the revival of the monster sci-fi franchise would extend its hand into the live action television realm, they may, in the short term, be disappointed.

Despite a previously-developed series, Star Wars Underworld, taking up drawer space at Disney, there's no active interest surrounding the prospect of bringing Star Wars to the small screen outside of animation.

"They are focused on their movies, so we don't have any plans at the moment," ABC president Paul Lee told TVLine. The focus rests solely in the currently airing Star Wars Rebels, which is midway through its second season and has been renewed for a third.

It makes sense. Having an animated project allows for the creators to mix characters new and old, bringing in much-loved members of the original trilogy (like this week's Princess Leia appearance) into the fold.

There are, however, rumours that Netflix could work on a Star Wars live-action series with Disney, and considering the collaboration between the streaming service and Marvel, this seems like a concept that has no losers involved.

With Star Wars films coming every year for the foreseeable future, we aren't going to be left wanting. Nevertheless, there might be a future for a live action TV helping of the galaxy far, far away, just waiting for the right inspiration.
