Disney's 1964 classic Mary Poppins will be getting a sequel 54 years later! The sequel is titled Mary Poppins Returns and it will star Emily Blunt (Into the Woods) and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton). The film will be directed by Rob Marshall (director of Into the Woods). Writer David Magee (Life of Pi) will be writing the script, an adaptation from the original P.L. Travers Mary Poppins stories.

The story is set to take place in Depression-era London, and will follow an older Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by their old nanny Mary Poppins after a personal loss. Poppins will once again use her unique powers to help the family “rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.” Lin-Manuel Miranda will be playing Jack, a character similar to Dick Van Dyke's Bert. Emily Blunt will play the iconic Mary Poppins.

Director Rob Marshall shared his thoughts on directing this film.

“I am truly humbled and honored to be asked by Disney to bring P.L. Travers’ further adventures to the screen. The iconic original film means so much to me personally, and I look forward to creating an original movie musical that can bring Mary Poppins, and her message that childlike wonder can be found in even the most challenging of times, to a whole new generation,”

Mary Poppins Returns will be heading into theaters December 25, 2018.
