Distribution Shifts for Matthew McConaughey's 'The Sea of Trees'
A24 will take over distribution for The Sea of Trees from Roadside Attractions/Lionsgate.
The film, starring Matthew McConaughey and Naomi Watts, had been picked up by the aforementioned companies prior to its Cannes debut in 2015. The film was booed at its premiere, though we're unsure whether this was directed at the suicide themes of the drama or something else.
McConaughey plays an American who travels to Japan's "Suicide Forest" with the intention of taking his own life after the death of his wife (played by Watts), and decides to help a lost Japanese Man (played by Ken Watanabe).
Gus Van Sant directed the movie, which hasn't received a release date just yet.
