'Game of Thrones' EP on the Secrets Behind that Stark Return, Last Week's Tragic Ending
Last night's Game of Thrones returned an episode that hasn't been seen since season 1, and has been searched for on and off since the show's inception. We can officially welcome Benjen Stark back into the fold, giving the fan-favourite family a much needed boost even as things are starting to look up for the Starks.
Executive producer Bryan Cogman spoke with EW regarding the episode, which he wrote, to give some insight on Benjen's return. "The show is so sprawling and there are so many threads, but – at it’s heart – it’s largely about this good family that was torn apart," Cogman says.
"So seeing some of them connect again (Jon and Sansa; Benjen and Bran) was very satisfying to write and to shoot." He indicated the joy of having Joseph Mawle back in the role, even if the character is largely unrecognisable.
Regarding the tragic Hodor ending of the previous week, Cogman knew that reaction was coming due to how beloved the character was. "The sequence moves the story and mythology into such a new and mind-bending direction."
