'Godzilla 2' Loses Director Gareth Edwards

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell The sequel to 2014's Godzilla reboot has lost director Gareth Edwards. A new release date of March 22, 2019 has been announced for the follow-up, perhaps to accomodate for the loss of the director, who helmed the first film two years ago.

Edwards directed Rogue One: A Star Wars Story following Godzilla, and has hopes to focus on smaller, more personal projects following two major franchise films. The split is reportedly an amicable one between the director and Legendary and Warner Bros., so there's every chance Edwards will collaborate with either studio in the future.

May 20, 2020 will see the Godzilla franchise grow, clashing with King Kong in a film titled Godzilla vs Kong. Both films will seek out directors to help steer the monster franchise onto a more assured path.

Kong: Skull Island comes out May 10, 2017.
