Gotham's Ben McKenzie on Gordon's Trials Ahead, Mr. Freeze, and Hugo Strange

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell Much of Gotham's midseason marketing has revolved around the introduction of Victor Fries, also known as Mr. Freeze, to be played by Nathan Darrow. Also introduced in the midseason premiere is BD Wong's interpretation of Hugo Strange, who has only ever ventured out of the comics for a role in the Batman: Arkham City video game.

Ahead of Ben McKenzie's continuously morally dubious turn as Jim Gordon, who ended last year by shooting Galava. Variety spoke with McKenzie, who said "We're trying to track Gordon's evolution into a more seasoned, and harder-edged cop dealing in a corrupt city."

"Suffice it to say that there will be significant repercussions [from shooting Galavan], and not just on the job, but personally. He starts to fray, he starts to break down a bit, not just from the investigation, but from having to look himself in the mirror, and face the shell of the man he once was."

McKenzie teases Gordon paying a price for what he's done, though it's an indirect punishment for Galavan's murder. On Mr. Freeze, he said he is "Motivated to freeze his wife so that he can find a cure for her disease, and save her life, so he's motivated by the most noble of instincts, and yet he goes too far."

And on the other side of the coin, there's Hugo Strange, who is a genius and his villainy is in his "Cold-blooded manipulativeness."
