HBO Parts Ways with 'Vinyl' Showrunner Terence Winter

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell It's been an interesting few months to say the least for HBO, with Westworld delays and David Fincher's scrapped Utopia series, but another setback has arrived in the form of an uneasy exit from showrunner Terence Winter.

Winter has a long history with HBO through The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire, but he departs production on Vinyl, which has seen poor numbers and critical reception, due to creative differences.

Deadline reported that Scott Z. Burns (The Bourne Ultimatum) will replace him as showrunner, as well as executive producing, alongside Max Borenstein. Borenstein has the recently developed and short-lived Fox series Minority Report.

With a second season already renewed for the series, the future of the show nevertheless is unpredictable. Whether the show will reconfigure itself or just try to pick up the pieces is unclear at this stage.

HBO had this to say in a statement: “As we head into the second season of Vinyl, we have decided it is an appropriate time to make a change in the creative direction of the show. We have enjoyed a longtime partnership with Terry Winter at HBO on projects from The Sopranos to Boardwalk Empire to Vinyl, and we look forward to our next collaboration with him. We are pleased to welcome Scott Z. Burns, executive producer and showrunner, and Max Borenstein, executive producer, as the new team helming the show.”
