Jason Momoa intends to Bring Complexity to Aquaman Role

James Wan Talks Aquaman, Zack Snyder's Influence, and Exploring the Depths of the Ocean

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell Aquaman has made his first big-screen appearance now that Batman v Superman has arrived, and while it may be underwhelming given the traction Jason Momoa's casting and character had built up in the lead up, there's definitely plenty to be excited about.

With the character's queen (or queen-to-be) having been cast for Justice League, it's predicted that Aquaman will play a major role in the film (the recent Throne of Atlantis storyline springs to mind). Now, James Wan has given a little bit of coverage on his 2018 solo venture into Aquaman's underwater realm.

While promoting The Conjuring 2, Wan was open in responding to questions regarding his DC project. While it is his vision of the character, Wan does say that Zack Snyder has had influence over the work that's being done.

"Well, I think the story that I would like to tell is still at the end of the day my story. And that's what's cool with Zack, is that he's actually very respectful of that. He's actually helping me out in some ways with certain things that he's doing with his [films] so that I can have better groundwork with the standalone Aquaman story."

Aquaman was first revealed in February 2015, prior to Wan being hired. Right now, as it stands, Aquaman is a clean slate, though that'll quickly change come November next year.

Wan does intend to make a "fun" Aquaman film despite the grimmer, darker setting of DC's universe. The director is excited about the idea of tackling a fresh, under-represented character, as opposed to such heroes as Spider-Man and Batman. On the chance to build an entire world beneath our surface, Wan said this:

"That’s the thing about Aquaman that’s cool is he’s not an alien, right? He’s from our planet and he’s from a society that we’re not privy to in the context of the story. Isn’t it crazy to think that we’ve explored space more than we have explored the depths of our ocean? That just fires up my imagination about potential sea monsters and cool creatures, that kind of stuff.”
